Peace Before the Storm

Peace Before the Storm

We have had some stormy weather roll in, so you need to be flexible with outdoor plans. We had a small two mile segment of the Holy Hill section of the Ice Age Trail to finish and we knew that we could finish it faster than we could complete a round of golf. We canceled our golf date, and ran out the door. I don’t normally wear golf skirts when hiking, but there was no time to change.

The Holy Hill Segment is quite rocky and hilly. This two mile stretch is entirely on private land and takes you past some lovely farmland. We noticed that there was scorching from a previous fire on some fallen trees. In addition, the ground was covered with hundreds of new growth maple trees.

This section of the trail has some great examples of kettles left when the glaciers receded from this part of the state. Since we’ve had some rain, you could find some residual water in the bottom of the kettles. The incoming storm made for some spectacular pictures. We made it back to car just as the sky opened up. Enjoy the pictures. Can you find the charcoal covered trees? How about the foot bridge, or maple seedlings? My favorite are the Queen Anne’s Lace and Goldenrod bordering the corn field.

One of my favorite segments. Hope you weathered the storms ok. Sounds like they were pretty intense.
