Macarons!

Macarons!

Have you ever wanted to learn to bake something but were afraid to try? That’s how I felt about macarons. Those little cookies always looked too exotic, too dainty and just too shiny and beautiful for me to be able to bake them.

A friend of mine gifted me a class on macaron making for Christmas, so no more excuses, it’s time to learn to make macarons. The class was at Chef Pam’s Kitchen in Waukesha and was friendly and welcoming. We were able to work in small groups of 4 or 5 to mix the batter, but everyone had a chance to pipe and fill their own cookies.

The chef taught us some simple tricks that are required in order for the macarons to turn out and actually look like macarons. This includes developing the batter so that it has the consistency of honey, allowing the cooky to rest after piping so that it develops the crust, double panning to prevent burning, and rotating the pans for even baking.

In order to keep our strength up, Chef Pam’s has liquid refreshments on site for purchase and they offered an appetizer to enjoy while the macarons were baking. I think that my macarons turned out pretty good for a first try and I can’t wait to start testing some new macaron recipes.
