Milwaukee River

Today was spent kayaking on the Milwaukee River between Newburg and Fredonia. There were five of us enjoying the beautiful day. I wish that pictures could tell the full story of the day, but you can’t hear the birds warning us away from their nests, or the squirrels chirping or even the sound of the water running over the shoreline. Fortunately, I had some friends to share the day and we were able to point out some of the sights to each other.

The water was really fast and kind of scary at the “put in” site, but we walked a short way and found a site with fewer rocks which was a little more friendly to us. In we went, and we didn’t look back. We saw an eagle, herons, an egret, a hawk, crows, a muskrat and many smaller birds. If you look closely you will see an eagle nest.

The ash trees are beginning to fall and it was interesting to see the impact fallen trees have on the flow of the river. Some of the trees closer to shore acted to catch smaller debris and quicken the water that flowed around it. In some of the side channels, there was so much tree fall, that you could see that the flow of water would eventually become inhibited. It would certainly prevent us from going through those channels. We also saw a fallen ash tree that landed in the middle of the river. It was already catching vegetative debris. Who knows? The start of a new river isle?

Often, when out in nature, we discuss some very profound and important things. Today, we decided that “naked” is a very silly word. Please enjoy my pictures.
